A new clinical trial has found that a treatment for severe cutaneous candidiasis (SC), including the recurrence of candidemia (CME), could significantly improve overall clinical outcomes and reduce the risk of recurrence.
A new study published in the Journal of Allergy, Investigational Medical Sciences in September, tested the efficacy of Lamisil cream for severe cutaneous candidiasis (SC). The study, which involved the use of a cream formulation, found that a combination of Lamisil cream and Terbinafine hydrochloride cream improved the cutaneous response to candidemia (SC) by 40%, compared to placebo treatment. The combination also showed a significant improvement in cutaneous activity, including skin redness and improvement in skin texture.
Lamisil cream was developed to combat fungal skin infections, but the results of this study were mixed, with some participants reporting improved symptoms and fewer adverse events compared to the placebo group. Lamisil cream was prescribed for severe cutaneous candidiasis to combat the infection, while Lamisil cream was prescribed for severe fungal skin infections, including rosacea.
“This new trial is a novel, well-designed, randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Lamisil cream in severe cutaneous candidiasis,” said Dr. Andrew R. Smith, professor of dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “These results suggest that the combination of Lamisil cream and Terbinafine hydrochloride cream, which is a topical antifungal, could potentially be an effective treatment for severe fungal skin infections.”
In addition to the study, the study enrolled patients with a history of severe cutaneous candidiasis who had previously failed to respond to topical antifungals. Patients who had failed topical antifungals (e.g., fluconazole, ketoconazole, and itraconazole) or had failed topical therapy (e.g., terbinafine or caspofungin) were excluded from the study.
All participants had at least one of the following conditions:
Dr. Smith’s study also looked at the efficacy and safety of Lamisil cream in patients with a history of serious skin infections. The study found that patients with a history of skin disorders (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis, and systemic fungal infections) had a significant improvement in all of the following metrics: skin redness, skin texture, and skin appearance.
“These data demonstrate that patients with severe cutaneous candidiasis (SC) benefit significantly from a combination of topical treatment with terbinafine hydrochloride cream and Lamisil cream,” said Dr.
“The results of this study are important to highlight the importance of patient education and ongoing assessment of potential treatment options when choosing a treatment for severe fungal skin infections. We are now looking at Lamisil cream and Terbinafine hydrochloride cream for the treatment of severe cutaneous candidiasis,” he continued.
The study was conducted at University Hospitals Medical Center, Birmingham. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
